Thomas Harkness was the youngest son of William and Jane Harkness. The family lived in Killygonlan, Ardboe. His father was a farmer. Thomas Harkness enlisted, it seems, with the North Irish Horse on 4th January 1917 in Antrim. He became ill during training and was discharged in December 1917. He had contracted vascular disease of the heart following acute rheumatism.
