Charles Herbert Burgess was the youngest son of Robert and Matilda Burgess. He was born on 26th August 1883. His was a doctor in Coagh from 1876. He was a Justice of the Peace (J.P.) in Coagh for many years. Charles attended the Royal School, Dungannon and then went to the University of Edinburgh. Captain Charles Burgess served with the Royal Army Medical Corps (R.A.M.C.) during the war. Captain Burgess was mentioned in General Allenby’s Dispatches in October 1918. Captain Charles Burgess survived the war. He was 35 years old when the war ended.

Charles Herbert Burgess was the youngest son of Robert and Matilda Burgess. Robert Burgess and Matilda Jane King. They were married on 11th April 1878 in the district of Derry.
Charles Burgess was born on 26th August 1883. He was the fourth of six children. All the children were born in Coagh.
Family: Robert Burgess, Matilda Jane Burgess, Helen Burgess (born 20th February 1879), Robert King Holmes Burgess (born 27th May 1880), Harold J Burgess (born 25th October 1881), Charles Herbert Burgess (born 26th August 1883), Gladys Mary Burgess (born 20th February 1885), Catherine Maude Burgess (born 6th December 1890).
Charles’ father, Robert Burgess, was a doctor in Coagh from 1876. He was a Justice of the Peace (J.P.) in Coagh for many years.
The 1901 census lists Harold as age 17, living with the family at house 18 in Hanover Street Coagh. Dr Burgess was a General Medical Practitioner and a Justice of the Peace. Charles was still at school.
Charles attended the Royal School, Dungannon.
Charles Burgess then went to the University of Edinburgh, where he qualified as M.B., Ch.B. in 1906.
The 1911 census does not list Charles as living with the family at house 17 in Hanover Street Coagh. In fact, he does not seem to be listed anywhere in the 1911 Irish census.
Captain Charles Burgess served with the Royal Army Medical Corps (R.A.M.C.) during the war.
Charles Burgess was made Lieutenant in the R.A.M.C. in December 1916. He was made Captain in December 1917.
Captain Charles Burgess was mentioned in General Allenby’s Dispatches in October 1918.
Captain Charles Burgess survived the war. He was 35 years old when the war ended.
When Charles’ father died in 1928, Dr Charles Burgess was the chief mourner.
