| John Young was the second son of David and Eliza Young. David Young and Eliza Marks were married on 7th April 1888 in the district of Cookstown.

| John Young was born on born 14th March 1890. He was one of at least eight children, all born in the Coagh area.

| The 1901 census lists John as age 10, living with the family at house 9 in Mullaghwotragh, Munterevlin, County Tyrone. His father was a labourer.
