It is believed Norman John Allen was born in County Antrim about 1898. The 1911 census lists a Norman J Allen living with as age 13, living with relatives at house 18 in Coagh. Samuel and Jane McKelvey were his aunt and uncle. Norman was still at school. Private Norman Allen served with the Royal Irish Rifles for a time, and also the Royal Irish Regiment. He was admitted to the hospital in October 1916 with pleurisy. Private Allen survived the war. He would have been about 20 years old when the war ended.

Norman John Allen was born in County Antrim about 1898.
The 1911 census lists a Norman J Allen living with as age 13, living with relatives at house 18 in Coagh. Samuel and Jane McKelvey were his aunt and uncle. Norman was still at school.
Private Norman Allen served with the 9th Royal Irish Rifles for a time, with the Service No 17118.
A military document entitled ‘Sick and wounded NCOs and men of the Expeditionary Force – France’ records that 1711 Private N Allen, Service Battalion, Royal Irish Rifles, had pleurisy ‘R Effusion Slt.’ He was admitted to the 3rd Canadian General Hospital on 7th October 1916.
Latterly, Private Norman Allen served with the Royal Irish Regiment, with the Service No 3347.
It is believed ‘R Effusion Slt’ is a medical term which may mean severe iritis effusion of the right lung.
Private Allen survived the war. He would have been about 20 years old when the war ended.
