| Norman John Allen was born in County Antrim about 1898.

| The 1911 census lists a Norman J Allen living with as age 13, living with relatives at house 18 in Coagh. Samuel and Jane McKelvey were his aunt and uncle. Norman was still at school.

| Private Norman Allen served with the 9th Royal Irish Rifles for a time, with the Service No 17118.

| A military document entitled ‘Sick and wounded NCOs and men of the Expeditionary Force – France’ records that 1711 Private N Allen, Service Battalion, Royal Irish Rifles, had pleurisy ‘R Effusion Slt.’ He was admitted to the 3rd Canadian General Hospital on 7th October 1916.

| It is believed ‘R Effusion Slt’ is a medical term which may mean severe iritis effusion of the right lung.
