Private Joseph Anderson (3rd Hussars), of Drapersfield, Cookstown, is home on leave. He went to France for the second time in March 1917, and took part in the battles of Arras and Cambrai, besides minor operations. He has now 28 years’ service, and claims to be the oldest soldier on active service in his regiment. He was with the Hussars in the retreat from Antwerp, and in the first battle of Ypres, when 80,000 British held 600,000 picked German troops from reaching Calais. He was wounded and his horse shot under him, and for his services he has got the Bronze Star.

His brother, Private Thomas Anderson, is now with the Skins in Palestine, driving the Turks over the Jordan. The latter was with the 10th Division at Gallipoli and Salonika. Both brothers fought in South Africa. Their mother is living at Drapersfield, where Joseph’s wife also resides.
