John Sandford was the son of William and Eliza Sandford. He was born on 21st June 1890. He was the youngest of three children, all born in the Moneymore area. John’s father died a year after he was born. John was a medical student. He served with the 4th Battalion of the Bedfordshire Regiment. In December 1917 he left the army to resume his medical studies. The Roll of Honour of Tamlaght National School (from the Mid Ulster Mail dated 10th June 1916) lists Lieutenant Sandford.

John Sandford was the son of William and Eliza Sandford. William Sandford and Eliza Ekin were married on 22nd September 1883 in the district of Magherafelt.
John Harris Ekin Sandford was born on 21st June 1890. He was the youngest of three children, all born in the Moneymore area.
Family: William Sandford, Eliza Sandford, William Hugh Sandford (born 7th July 1884), Anna Lila Sandford (born 8th August 1886), John Harris Ekin Sandford (born 21st June 1890).
John’s father, William Sandford, appears to have died a year after John was born on 23rd August 1891, aged 38.
The 1901 census lists John as age 10, living with the family at house 2 in Hammond Road, Moneymore. His mother was a widow, but did have an occupation. The family employed a servant, which implies they retained some wealth.
The 1911 census lists John Harris Ekin Sandford as age 20, living with the family at house 6 in Hammond Road, Moneymore. John was a medical student.
Lieutenant John Harris Ekin Sandford served with the 4th Battalion of the Bedfordshire Regiment.
According to his medal card, Lieutenant Sandford entered France on 24th July 1916.
The Bedfordshire Regiment war diary for 1917 notes that on 3rd Dec 1917, Lieutenant and Acting Captain J H E Sandford was struck off strength on resuming his medical studies.
The Roll of Honour of Tamlaght National School (from the Mid Ulster Mail dated 10th June 1916) lists Lieutenant John Harris Ekin Sandford.
