Ellen McKeown was the youngest child of Robert and Eliza McKeown. She was the youngest of nine children. All the children were born in the Moneymore – Coagh area. Her father was a farmer. Nellie became a nurse and was working and living in Belfast by 1911. She joined the Q.A.I.M.N.S.R. in the spring of 1917. She was posted to Dover on 2nd May 1917, where she served at the Military Hospital, Dover during the war. In March 1919, after demobilisation, she returned to Belfast.

The History of Coagh booklet lists Staff Nurse Ellen McKeown as having served with the Queen Alexandra's Imperial Military Nursing Service Reserve (Q.A.I.M.N.S.R.) in the war.
Ellen McKeown was the youngest daughter of Robert and Eliza McKeown. Robert McKeown and Eliza Skeffington were married on 17th October 1872 in the district of Cookstown.
Ellen ‘Nellie’ McKeown was born on 10th August 1887. She was the youngest of nine children. All the children were born in the Moneymore – Coagh area.

The 1901 census lists Nellie as age 13, living with the family at house 15 in Tamlaght, Springhill, County Londonderry. Nellie was still at school. Her father was a farmer.
The 1911 census does not list Nellie as living with the family at house 13 in Tamlaght, Springhill.
The 1911 census lists Ellen as age 23, a hospital nurse living at house 192.2 in Falls Road, St Anne's Ward, Belfast. It may be presumed that she was working and the Royal Victoria Hospital.
Nurse Nellie McKeown was living at the Nurses Home, The Infirmary, Belfast when she was received a letter informing her of acceptance to the Queen Alexandra's Imperial Military Nursing Service Reserve on 2nd February 1917.
She was posted to Dover on 2nd May 1917, where she served at the Military Hospital, Dover during the war.
In March 1919, after demobilisation, she returned to live at the Nurses Home, The Infirmary, Belfast.
