Prior to enlisting, William McCollum was employed with Mr Hugh Dickson, Lower Coagh. At the Battle of the Somme, on 1st July 1916, he is reported to have shown conspicuous gallantry. After which he was awarded a stripe. In 1919, Private William McCollum received the Military Medal (M.M.)
