Rev Charles Leslie Garnett, M.A., was born in 1841 at Williamstown, Kells, Co Meath. He was the son of George Garnett by C. A. Stawell, daughter of Jonas Stawell, of Old Court , Doneraile. He was a Church of Ireland curate. He was first in Carnteel (1867), Tynan (1868-74), Ballyclog (1874-75). He became rector of Ardtrea Parish Church in 1875.
Claude Garnett was the (youngest?) son of Charles and Ella Sephia Garnett. Rev Charles Leslie Garnett and Ella Stuart were married on 2nd March 1875 in the district of Cookstown.
Claude’s mother was Lady Ella Sephia Stuart, daughter of 4th Earl of Castlestuart.
Claude D Estarills Garnett was born on 27th April 1884 in the Coagh. It seems he was the youngest child.
Known family: Charles Leslie Garnett, Ella Garnett, Violet Ella J Garnett (born 9th March 1876), Marjory Garnett (born 18th March 1877), Catherine Garnett (born 29th August 1878), Winifred Garnett (born about 1879, Tyrone), Charles Garnett (born 25th September 1879), Annette Garnett (born 20th November 1880), Rosamond Garnett (1st June 1882), Claude D Estarills Garnett (born 27th April 1884).
The 1901 census does not list Claude as living with the family at house 1 in Glebe, Coagh. His father was a widower and a clergyman of the Church of Ireland.
Rev Charles Leslie Garnett, remarried in 1901, marrying Anne Elizabeth Alexander, daughter of Robert Alexander of Garristown, County Meath and Acton, County Armagh.
The 1911 census lists Claude as age 25, living with the family at house 1 in Glebe, Coagh. He is described as being a ‘gentleman’.
Claude, his father and his step-mother all signed the Ulster Covenant in 1912. They were residents of Ardtrea. Violet Garnett was living in Westminster when she signed.
Rev Charles Leslie Garnett died on 25th September 1914 at Ardtrea Rectory.
It is believed Claude and Stewart Garnett were related, as there were few Garnetts in Ireland, and only one family in the Tyrone area.
